It Works! Review

If you’re anything like me, you’ve seen the It Works! wraps all over the place for at least the past few months, and have probably been a bit skeptical about the amazing results people are claiming from their use.

I’ll be very honest with you, I do NOT believe in get-skinny-fast products.  While some of them may work to some extent, they are neither healthy nor long-term.  After talking to a few friends and distributors, I came to the conclusion that many distributors are marketing these wraps in a way that is far from their intended use.  Yes, I have seen It Works! distributors claim that you can lose weight simply by using these wraps…not even kidding, I’ve watched Facebook conversations with distributors trying to convince people that they can lost 100+ pounds with the wraps alone.  I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but it’s just not going to work that way.  (If you want real lasting weight-loss, slow and healthy is the way and I have friends that have seen great results with this product line.)

Now, since I’m not in the market for weight loss products, but have this dreadful “twin skin” leftover from carrying great birth-weight twins  to term on my 120 lb frame, I thought, why not give these wraps a shot and see if it tightens and firms like they are supposed to?!

So I went out and found a distributor with integrity.  One I hadn’t seen making crazy weight-loss claims and knew I could trust to be honest with me about what kind of results to expect.  Megan Szafran is the lady to talk to if you want to give these wraps a shot!  They are reasonably priced and she’s great to work with!  (Disclosure: Megan was kind enough to send me a couple of wraps to try in exchange for an advertising spot on my blog.  All opinions of the product shared here are my own!)

wrap1 beforeafter 0011 It Works! Review

I followed all of the directions to the mark, except for drinking about twice the recommended amount of water since that was normal for me.  I wore the wrap for about 50 minutes and my measurements were actually the same as before.  Now, this is the part where I get really, really honest.  This wrap STUNG.  I must be one of the few that has a reaction of some sort to something in the wrap.  You can actually still see some of the red on my side in one of my after pictures and that was more than 48 hours later.

wrap1 beforeafter 0022 It Works! Review

Meghan was great when I showed her my results and quick to help me attempt to troubleshoot if there might have been a reason for my bad reaction to them.  I did see a small decrease in measurements around the 24 hour mark, but they were back to normal around 48 hours.  But as you can see in my pictures, the “twin skin” did become a bit tighter!  According to Meghan and some of my friends who have had more experience with the wraps, you begin to see much more noticeable changes after the second and third wraps.

Again, honesty: I’m still trying to work up the nerve to try the second wrap that I have.  I’m really hoping my reaction was a one time thing.  :)  In the meantime, I’m working out, hydrating like crazy and eating well to tighten my skin the natural way!

wrap1 beforeafter 003 It Works! Review

Everyone’s results are different with this product and I’ve seen some amazing before and afters from close friends of mine.  So if you’re looking to shrink a bit for a wedding, weekend at the beach, or something of that sort, I can really recommend these!  Not so much if you expecting long-term results and are not willing to put in the lifestyle changes of exercise and healthy food choices!  If you’re interested in trying a wrap, be sure to contact Meghan Szafran!  You can find her on Facebook here or find out more about the It Works! product line here.

How To: Create A Blog Button

Recently I was helping a fellow Project Dream International member get her new WordPress set up and the JetPack Image widget was nowhere to be found!  Well, that’s a bit of a problem when you’re trying to teach a complete newbie how to add simple buttons to their sidebars!  Instead I walked her through how to create a bit of code to get those buttons up on her blog.  And well, why not share that bit of know-how with all of you, too?

How to create a blog button How To: Create A Blog Button

So, here we go, how to make a blog button:

First of all, if you are a completely new blogger, you might be wondering what the heck a button is and why you need one.  Well, buttons are quite versatile and relatively easy to create once you get the hang of it.  The most common buttons are ones that you can share with other blogs, people can “grab” your button (or, more appropriately, the code for your button) and add it to their site, linking back to yours. Buttons are also great for internal links and other external links.  It’s more visually appealing than a simple text link.

So a button is an image that you click on that acts as a link.  Pretty simple, right?

Obviously, the first thing you need is an image.  Sometimes you’ll be working with a ready-made image; other times, you’ll be creating one from scratch.  My favorite place to create buttons is PicMonkey.  Yes, I have Photoshop, but PicMoney is just so quick and easy to use, that I often head there first.

You just go to the site, upload your picture and use the tools to tweak it.  You can crop, resize, edit, embellish with tons of neat add-ons, you name it, you can do it.  Here’s a peek at what I created over there this morning:

PicMonkey Button Tutorial 1024x550 How To: Create A Blog Button

The important part about creating the button is to make sure it’s the correct size.  The button I made is 250 pixels by 150 pixels, but the common size for most buttons is 125 x 125.  I tend to make my larger if they are just going in my sidebar rather than being shared with other bloggers.  Larger buttons are great to create a link to an affiliate platform, brand partner, or popular series that you have done.

Once you’ve created your button, save it some place you’ll remember. icon wink How To: Create A Blog Button

Next you’re going to upload the image to your site.  The directions I’m sharing are for self-hosted WordPress sites.  If you’re on something else, you should be able to use PhotoBucket or something similar for this part.

On your WP dashboard, go to Media –> Add New and upload the image you want to use for you button.

Media Add New Button Tutorial How To: Create A Blog Button

When the file is uploaded successfully, click “edit.”

Media Edit Button Tut How To: Create A Blog Button

Double-check your image size while you’re in here and copy the File URL on the right.  (Note: You do NOT want the permalink or the link in your toolbar.  ONLY the File URL in the box on the right will work in later steps!).  If you made any changes while on this page to the title, description or any of that, be sure to hit Update before you leave the page.

File URL How To: Create A Blog Button

Now we’re going to actually go create the widget!  Go to Appearance –> Widgets on the right hand menu.

Screen Shot 2013 05 03 at 8.16.51 AM How To: Create A Blog Button

Then you’re going to select the Text widget.  In some dashboards you will have the Add spot to click on, in others you will need to click and drag the widget over to the sidebar you want it in.

Screen Shot 2013 05 03 at 8.17.10 AM How To: Create A Blog Button

This is where you will actually be creating and entering the HTML for your button.  The Title box creates the header for your widget.  If you don’t want a header, simply leave it blank.  And then in the body, we’ll enter some really simple code.

Text Widget Collage How To: Create A Blog Button

Now for the code:

<a href=”Where You Want the Link to Go”><img src=”Your Image URL“></a>

So in my case, it turned out like this:

<a href=”http://danischnakenberg.com/work-with-Dani/”><img src=”http://danischnakenberg.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Work-with-Dani-250×150.jpg“></a>

Make sure you leave the quotation marks and only replace the colourful parts in-between.  If your button doesn’t work the first time, you may need to delete and retype the quotation marks.

Also, I added <center> to the beginning of my code and </center> to the end of my code to make the button centered in the widget.

Below the text widget box, you’ll see a place to select where on your site you want the widget and below that a Save button.  Once you’ve done those two things, head on over to your site and check out your new button!  (Don’t forget to click on it and make sure the link is working properly!)

Join me next week when I’ll be posting about how to create a “Grab A Button” box for your blog!  And if you have any questions about this tutorial please feel free to ask!

{Simplify Your Life} Project 14

I am working on catching up our Simplify Your Life series where we are working through Tsh Oxenredier’s eBook One Bite at a Time.  We’re jumping back in on Project 14 and I will soon be adding the weeks I’ve skipped.  If you haven’t gotten your own copy of the eBook, you can snag one here.

One Bite 300x2501 {Simplify Your Life} Project 14

Project 14: Eat Whole Foods (on a budget)

We’re not 100% there yet, but over the last 6 months we’ve been focusing on removing processed foods from our lifestyle. As a family of six on a tight budget, I’m challenged to do this as inexpensively as possible. It’s not easy, but it is doable!

We are a little boring with the type of meat we eat. It’s mostly chicken breasts, tilapia fillets, and ground beef or turkey. We eat a lot of things where the meat stretches, particularly chilis or stews that can be stretched with beans, or casseroles that use shredded chicken.  Occasionally, if we can get a good deal or have beef from a family-friend’s farm, we’ll have pork chops, loins, ribs, or even steaks, but they aren’t part of our usual fare. Eating less meat, and not buying expensive cuts regularly, keep us healthy and our budget low.

Buy in bulk. We have a Sam’s membership and have price matched to ensure that we are getting the best quality at the best price when it comes to our meat and baking supplies. Also, food co-ops are a great resource. There are big ones like Zaycon for meat (that’s where I buy my chicken breasts for $1.79/lb), and even smaller ones for farm-fresh dairy. Can’t find one in your area? Organize one! I’ve currently got one for farm-fresh beef in the works!

Be smart about buying, preparing, and storing produce. Let’s face it, produce is expensive, especially the good stuff and in many households, a lot of it goes to waste. I know this has been the case for us in the past.

Follow the rules of the dirty dozen. If you can’t afford to buy it all organic, focus on the dirty dozen. According to the Environmental Working Group, these have the highest levels of pesticides.

Click here for the printable version.

Buy local! Farmers’ markets and CSAs are your friend here. You can talk to the farmer and find out how the produce is grown, there is minimal environmental impact for the transportation of the produce, and you’re supporting the local economy directly.LocalHarvest.org is a great website for finding one near you.

Buy in season! Seasonal produce tastes better and is higher in nutritional value than out of season produce that has been shipped from who knows where. It’s also easier on your wallet.

inseasonSpring {Simplify Your Life} Project 14

Click here for the printable version.

Grow your own! If you have the space (it doesn’t take much) and the time, start a garden. Focus on plants that grow well in your area and fit your space and needs. (More on this later this Spring!)

Once you get the produce home…then what? Well, it’s important to prepare and store it well. I hope to post more in-depth on this soon, but here is the short version:

Wash produce well in something more than water. Pesticides are water-resistant, so you’re going to want to soak them off in something. Many people suggest an equal-parts mix of vinegar and water, but I find it leaves a faint aftertaste, particularly on my berries. I’ve been using just a few tiny drops of Shaklee Basic H for an entire sink full of produce and it works wonderfully and is very inexpensive.

Store your produce properly. Check out my guest post at ErinBrans.com on how to properly use your crisper drawers. If you have an over-abundance, look into freezing, canning, or dehydrating to preserve it for future use.

And the biggest way to stay under budget while eating whole foods: leave out the processed food. Seriously, you just don’t need it. You can make your own mixes (baking, pancakes, cakes, brownies, seasonings). If it has more than 5 ingredients, you can make it yourself for probably pennies on the dollar. This is a rather slow process at our house as hubby refuses to give up soda and even I like a good ol’ bag of chips now and then. But we definitely have less around our house than we used to and our budget and health show it! It’s easy to baby-step your way to 100% whole foods. I love the site100 Days of Real Food for more info on this!

The Picky Palate Cookbook & Giveaway

If you ask my husband, he’ll probably tell you that I have a slight obsession with cookbooks.  Sure, there are millions of recipes available online, but I just really love having the books with all their beautiful photos and the love that the authors pour into them.  I will admit to having quite a few that I never or rarely touch.  Well, that is not the case with this one!

The Picky Palate 3sm The Picky Palate Cookbook & Giveaway

You can buy your own copy here:

The Picky Palate Cookbook is one of the most used ones in my collection.  It even has the sticky fingerprints to prove it!  I’ve had the book for a few months now and keep saying “One more recipe and I’ll put the review up on the blog.”  Yeah, I lost track of how many times I’ve said that.  I’ve just enjoyed cooking from this book so much!

The first recipe that had to me made from this book when it arrived was the Oreo-Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies.  Oh yeah, had to be done ASAP!

I may or may not have eaten most of the batch by myself.

For the next week, I cooked primarily from this cookbook.  And most of the pictures to prove it seem to have disappeared during my transition to my new laptop in January.  Drat!  Some of our favorites were:

  • Cheesy Pepperoni Pizza Quick Bread
  • Spanish Rice
  • Creamy Chicken-Spaghetti Bake
  • Cheesy Chicken Pot Pies
  • Creamy Chipotle Chicken Tortellini with White Beans and Cilantro
  • Rigatoni Skillet Dinner
  • Simple Shrimp Scampi
  • Baked Tilapia Parmesan
  • Chicken and Dumplings

And then here are the ones I’ve made since the switch!

I can honestly say there wasn’t a single recipe we tried that wasn’t a hit with at least 3 out of 4 of our main eaters.  And I still have plenty more that I can’t wait to try!

So here is the fun part, Jenny hooked me up with a copy of her cookbook to give away!

A New Adventure

I am excited to announce that tonight I am launching a new part of my website.

A few months ago when I first hatched this idea of creating my own blog planner, I never dreamt I’d be at this point today.  But here I am, launching my first shopping cart and affiliate program.  Thank you to everyone who helped me get here, from editing and proofing, to just plain encouragement, I cannot thank you all enough for pushing me to pursue my little dream.

Meal Planning Binder Revamp (with Printables!)

Have you ever read the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie?  Well, yesterday, the Type-A-Mommy version happened around here.  It all started as I was writing out Carter and I’s packing list for Blissdom.  It occurred to me that I still needed to meal plan for the rest of the family that was staying home.  I mean, I could leave them to fend for themselves, hubby’s mom is coming to stay with them, so it’s not like they would be stuck eating PB&J and grilled cheese for four days. But then how would I know what to shop for?

So then I sat down to try to figure this out…and ended up totally ripping apart my meal planning binder and redoing it–complete with fun new printables!  That’s right, I said PRINTABLES!

bindercollagefinal Meal Planning Binder Revamp (with Printables!)

My binder has 5 tabs.  I love these Avery 5-tab write-on dividers with pockets.  I write my labels on with wet erase markers so I can change them up as needed.  And the pockets are handy for sliding in recipe cards, or magazine pages I haven’t filed yet.  My favorite thing I incorporated when I redid my binder was include tabs for recipes and resources I find in magazines and other places.  It’s so darned handy and I don’t have to store the whole magazine somewhere.

Now, the part you’ve all been waiting for: the PRINTABLES!  *and the crowd goes WILD*  Okay, maybe not, but I know that’s how I feel.  Is there a 12-step program for printable organizing sheets?

{Simplify Your Life} Project Six

Oh my, am I behind on this series! February was full of illness and health issues for our family and life is finally returning to semi-normal for us and I have the time to get back to it!

For my new readers or those who have forgotten, I am working my way through Tsh Oxenreider’s eBook “One Bite at a Time.” We’re picking up with Project Six today and I plan to try to get us caught up to weekly posts by about mid-April. I will be taking some time off from the blog to attend Blissdom Blogger Conference in a couple of weeks, but I’m sure I’ll have an awesome re-cap of how it went since I’m taking one of the twins with me. icon smile {Simplify Your Life} Project Six

One Bite 300x2501 {Simplify Your Life} Project Six

Project Six: Create a family purpose statement

Coming up with a family purpose statement was far from easy.  It took a lot of though about the true purpose of raising a family.  What is our biggest responsibility as parents?  What reward are we seeking?

We came up with a lot of answers to those questions but they all seemed to point in the same directions: we are aiming to raise our children up to be happy people who lead fulfilling lives.

familypurposestatement 1024x1024 {Simplify Your Life} Project Six

Not every family feels the same way, I’m sure, but my husband and I really feel that our purpose as parents is to raise the next generation to be giving and productive as a member of society.  And more importantly, to teach them how to raise their kids to do the same.

meandtwinswatermarked 682x1024 {Simplify Your Life} Project Six

So much of this has to be taught by example.  Our children will learn how to treat their future spouses and children by watching how their father and I treat each other and their siblings.  We teach them to love by SHOWING them love on a daily basis.  Consequently, this is also how we teach them conflict resolution.  If they never see us resolve our issues, they will never learn how to do it on their own.  Hiding our disagreements would give them a false representation of a normal, healthy relationship.

Looking back, I can see that I didn’t have the best examples when it came to relationships, parenting, or even finances.  My very early adult years were spent repeating the mistakes I had seen made over and over.  Lucky me, I fell in love with a very patient man who grew up in a family that set a better example.

meandkidswatermarked 1024x682 {Simplify Your Life} Project Six

But we also know we can’t only live our example and expect our kids to just catch on.  There has to be some intentional parenting and planned lessons along the way.

Our children are very young, but we already have a list of life lessons we will make sure they learn before the leave the nest!
